Floriana, Malta - 10 January 2025

Last January 9th, we had the privilege of stepping into one of Malta’s most exciting new cultural spaces—the Malta International Contemporary Arts Space (MICAS). Nestled in the historic San Salvatore bastion in Floriana, MICAS represents a bold new chapter in the island’s artistic evolution, seamlessly blending contemporary creativity with Malta’s architectural heritage.

A Landmark Opening: Ray Pitrè’s Figure in Rods

Our visit was inspired by a very special occasion. We were honored to be invited by MICAS to attend the opening of Ray Pitrè: Figure in Rods, a powerful exhibition celebrating the final work of one of Malta’s most visionary artists.

This is more than just an exhibition—it is a celebration of a visionary artist’s enduring legacy and a testament to the power of contemporary art to challenge, inspire, and move us.

The opening was accompanied by a presentation by renowned art historian Joseph Paul Cassar, offering further insight into Pitrè’s artistic journey and the conceptual development behind his seminal work.

A Day of Remembrance and Insight

The event took an emotional turn as family members and close friends of Pitrè shared personal anecdotes and reflections on the artist’s profound influence. Their stories provided intimate glimpses into Pitrè’s passion for art, his relentless curiosity, and his ability to find beauty and meaning in overlooked materials. Many attendees found themselves moved by these heartfelt tributes, reinforcing the significance of his final work as not just an artistic statement, but a deeply personal testament to his legacy.

The event also featured thought-provoking discussions on Pitrè’s ability to confront psychological and societal constraints through his art. Several speakers drew parallels between Figure in Rods and contemporary issues, from the impact of urbanisation to the universal struggle of navigating isolation and identity.

MICAS: A Visionary Space for Contemporary Art

MICAS is more than just an exhibition venue; it is a statement of Malta’s commitment to becoming a major player in the global contemporary art scene. Located at the Ospizio Complex in Floriana, the center is housed within historic fortifications that have been meticulously restored and reimagined for modern artistic expression. The project is an architectural masterpiece, maintaining the integrity of Malta’s iconic limestone bastions while introducing cutting-edge gallery spaces, open-air installations, and a dynamic program of international collaborations.

The design of MICAS respects the existing levels of the site, with the structure unfolding in a series of terraces that blend effortlessly into the surrounding fortifications. The monumental roof—a striking steel structure—acts as both a protective canopy and an architectural statement, allowing for natural ventilation and lighting while serving as a versatile exhibition space.

Since its inauguration in late 2024, MICAS has been positioning itself as an essential stop on the contemporary art circuit, hosting large-scale exhibitions, artist residencies, and cultural events that bridge Malta with the international art world.

An Invitation to Experience Pitrè’s Vision

For those who were unable to attend the opening night, the exhibition remains open to the public until 29 June 2025. Whether you are an art aficionado or a casual visitor, Ray Pitrè: Figure in Rods promises an experience that is as visually compelling as it is intellectually and emotionally stirring.
